MNAs rally against Nov 3 emergency

By Irfan Bukhari

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz parliamentarians protested on Tuesday against the imposition of an emergency in November 2007 by former president Pervez Musharraf.

The rally started from the National Assembly and ended at the Supreme Court, to mark November 3 as a “black day”.

The Pakistan Peoples Party’s Khurshid Shah, Babar Awan, Ayatullah Durrani and Makhdoom Shahab also participated in the demonstration to express their party’s solidarity with the PML-N.

The Awami National Party’s Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour – along with two female MPs – and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s Rehmatullah Kakar joined the peaceful protest. No prominent leader from the PML-Quaid or the Muttahida Qaumi Movement participated in the rally.

The participants, escorted by heavy contingents of police, shouted slogans for Musharraf to be put to trial under Article 6. PML-N lawmakers were also carrying placards calling for the repeal of the 17th Amendment and an independent judiciary and parliament.

PML-N leaders also delivered fiery speeches outside the SC building against Musharraf, and expressed solidarity with the families of the missing persons.
